South East Locality Information

The South East Locality covers 4 ward areas, City Centre, Southside/Newington, Morningside and Liberton/Gilmerton. 

The population of the area is 137,642 with 19,017 people over the age of 65 and 17,209 children under the age of 16. 

Key challenges

  • South East has the second highest rate of child poverty with rates of 31% in both City Centre and Lberton/Gilmerton 
  • The City Centre faces many challenges with higher than average crime rates, incidents of anti-social behaviour and numbers of people begging and sleeping rough 
  • Liberton/Gilmerton is diverse and includes many areas where there needs to be focus on reducing inequality and disadvantage including, Southhouse, Burdiehouse, Moredun and Gracemount. Poor standards of health and low levels of professional and educational qualifications are amongst the greatest challenges in these areas

The revised priorities

  1. Engage and support young people and their families to develop the skills they need to thrive and reach their potential, targeting support at those in greatest need
  2. Engage with and provide support to those who are rough sleeping, begging and street drinking in the city centre and southside, working closely with local partners 
  3. Support people in Dumbiedykes, including those experiencing hardship, and help co-ordinate a sustainable response that builds community resilience and promotes life chances
